4 Steps to Selling on eBay

Page 3

Step III: Write the Description

Copy the "eBayHTML" text to your computer in WordPad, SimpleText, or other text editor (MS Word will display it as a web page and not as an HTML text file so don't use it) and save it with the file ending ".txt"

Edit the following parts:

  • the title at the top

  • the first picture URL to the correct name & size of your first picture. Also change the picture title.

  • the actual text portion (this may mean changing as little as the item name once you have it saved with your own sales text).

  • make sure the shipping/postage info is correct.

  • the second picture  URL, at the bottom. Again, change the file name, the size, and the title.
    • If you don't have a second picture, you can select the entire section in GREEN, from the <tr> to the </tr>, and delete it. If you want to add a third picture, just copy and paste the entire section, including the <tr> and </tr> tags, and paste it next line down, and change the file name & size to your 3rd picture's info. You can add as many pictures as you want this way.
Save your file. If you want to see how it looks, just open the file in AOL or whatever browser you use to see it appear as a web page. If you are not signed on, the pictures won't show since it'll be trying to get them from online, so don't worry if they don't show up if you're offline.

Step IV: List on eBay

Go to eBay and click Sell at the very top. Follow the steps to select your item category.

  • At the next step, fill in the item title, and then copy and paste your entire eBayHTML text into the text section. Click the "Preview" link just below it to make sure it appears the way it's supposed to. Make edits and preview as necessary.

  • On the next screen, set your auction details (time, price, etc.). Just below that, make sure the "Your Own Web Hosting" tab is selected (not eBay picture services), and click the button that says "description already contains picture URL." Skip all the other options, unless you want to add them and pay for them. At the bottom select a free counter if you want it.

  • On the next screen, set all your payment & shipping info. In the payment instructions area, you can leave it blank or put in something like "Please see item listing for payment and shipping information."

  • On the last screen, review it all, make changes if necessary, and submit!
  • Once you have the first item listed, use the "list similar item" link on your My eBay Selling page, next to items you have listed, to get directly to the complete item listing. On the next screen, click Continue. Then just make the necessary changes right there rather than writing it out first in WordPad. Also, by using this link, all your settings are already there (category, payment & shipping info, etc.) and you can just review and change them rather than starting from scratch each time.

You can track your items on your My eBay page Selling tab. eBay will invoice you once a month for all fees. You can find out what your exact charges for everything are by going to your Accounts tab.
